Introducing Caring for Children and Young People
d) Responses should include one example and the relevant area of development – e.g.
A child aged 20 months will enjoy singing action songs like ‘The Wheels on the Bus’
(language development).
A child aged 20 months will enjoy playing simple games with other children, such
as kicking a ball (physical development).
e) Exemplar response:
Outline language development for children in the first three years of life
A baby can respond to sounds and cry when hungry or distressed. Within a few
weeks, babies can also coo and gurgle and copy sounds e.g. those made by their
carer. They start to make recognised sounds from about six months old and show
they understand words such ‘mummy’ or ‘bye-bye’.
From about one year/12 months, children start to talk and begin to join in songs.
Young children like action songs like ‘Wheels on the bus’ and enjoy stories.
Children between two and three years old learn new words very quickly, ask
questions and can join in and say rhymes.
Activity 6: Rates of development
a) Responses should link to Figure 2. e.g.
Mae: may develop language more slowly as her brothers often speak for her.
Eve: may be less confident in climbing, running, jumping, etc. because Mum does
not encourage this.
b) Responses should link to Figure 2. e.g.
Mae: may be good at running and playing with a ball as she plays with her older
brothers.
Eve: may be good at using numbers to count as her mum helps her to learn.
