Introducing Caring for Children and Young People
C Case Study: Gunther’s routine
Refer to the information above for Section 3.3 to help you with this
activity.
Gunther is ten months old. His mum has started to take him to a
childminder, called Tatiana, three mornings a week. Tatiana
ensures Gunther’s basic needs are met. She also cares for two other
young children, aged two years. This is Gunther’s morning routine
with Tatiana:
Arrive:
Tatiana welcomes Gunther and gives him a cuddle to reassure
him. She listens to Gunther’s mum explain the time he woke up
and what he had for breakfast, so that she can work out
Gunther’s needs for the morning. Tatiana sits Gunther on the
carpet where the other children are playing and encourages
him to wave hello as she introduces him, saying, ‘This is
Gunther. Gunther wave hello’. Toys and puzzles are set out
ready for him.
Snack time:
Tatiana gives Gunther a drink of milk and some healthy finger
foods, such as strips of pitta bread.
Mid-morning:
Tatiana changes Gunther’s nappy, talking to him and explaining what
she is doing as she cleans him. She settles him to sleep, playing
some quiet, soothing music. When Gunther awakes, Tatiana is there
to reassure him again. She settles him with some toys to hold and
looks at a book with him and the other children.
Lunch:
Tatiana provides lunch before Gunther leaves with his mum. Gunther
is keen to feed himself, so Tatiana gives him food which is easy to
pick up with a spoon, such as cheesy mashed potato, and also carrots
cut in strips, which he can pick up with his fingers. When he and the
other children have finished their lunch, Tatiana takes them all into
the garden, where they play with a ball together, rolling it to each
other, or in the small sand pit until Gunther’s mum arrives. Tatiana
tells Gunther’s mum what Gunther had for lunch, and how long he
slept for. She waves goodbye to Gunther, and he waves back.
For each part of Gunther’s morning, explain how Tatiana is
supporting Gunther’s development by filling in the table on the
next page.
