                   b)  A baby between three and six months can start to hold objects and put things in
                        his/  her mouth. The baby can also roll from side to side.




                   c)  A baby aged eight months enjoys games such a playing with an adult. He or
                         she knows that objects still exist even if they are out of sight. The baby can make
                        connections between objects – e.g. knowing a bottle contains milk.




                   d) Responses should include one example and the relevant area of development –
                        e.g.

                        A ten month old baby will enjoy standing up with help (physical development).

                        A ten month old baby will enjoy action songs and rhymes.




                   Activity 5: Stages of development

                   Responses for a, b, c, and d should relate to Figure 2 Typical Stages of Development:
                   Young children aged from 12 months to three years.




                   a) Responses could include:


                         •   Build small towers with bricks

                         •   Shows interest in other children


                         •   Understands yes and no


                         •   Joins in with songs.


                   b) Exemplar response:


                         A child aged 18 to 24 months can walk, sit and stand. He/she can hold and play
                        with small objects such as crayons. The child can climb onto furniture and play with

                        a ball.


                   c) Exemplar response:

                        A  child aged 24 to 36 months knows some colours and might count 1, 2, 3.

                        He/she will enjoy playing with puzzles and jigsaws.
