Information, Advice or Guidance
The effects of discrimination on the over 60s may include:
• Failure to access the information, advice or guidance they need
• Too embarrassed to admit they are unable to access the information,
advice or guidance they need
• Reluctance to engage with another organisation who may be able to provide
them with the information, advice or guidance they need.
Non-EU residents
Clients who are non-EU residents may struggle to engage with the information, advice
or guidance given to them by an advisor due to the following reasons:
• Language barriers: unable to read/speak the language of the advisor/
resource
• Cultural barriers: cultural differences between client and advisor may cause
issues.
The issues mentioned above can lead to the discrimination of clients who are non-EU
residents, either indirectly or directly. If an organisation prints all of its materials in
only English, for example, this would be an example of indirect discrimination. On the
other hand, if an advisor knowingly provided a client with resources only printed in
English, knowing that the client would be unable to utilise the resource, this would be
an example of direct discrimination.
The effects of discrimination on non-EU residents may include:
• Failure to access the information, advice or guidance they need
• Too embarrassed to admit they are unable to access the information,
advice or guidance they need
• Reluctance to engage with another organisation who may be able to provide
them with the information, advice or guidance they need.
