• Discrimination in any form is illegal
• Discrimination can have a long-lasting negative effect on
clients and staff
• There are four main types of discrimination: direct, associative,
indirect and discrimination by perception.
Discrimination towards clients is particularly damaging, especially when the client is
being discriminated against because of a protected characteristic.
Q. What is a protected characteristic?
A. Protected characteristics are a group of specific aspects of an individual that
are protected by the law, in particular The Equality Act 2010. Everyone in Britain
is protected by this Act and the protected characteristics outlined under it.
