Counselling Skills
Q. Why is it important to understand this difference?
A. Counselling is all about helping people to change. Expressing sympathy or
pity can hinder this process by keeping the client stuck at a particular point
and succumbing to self-pity.
Non-possessive warmth
Non-possessive warmth means having an attitude of friendliness towards others.
This enables the helping relationship to grow and develop. It makes the client feel
comfortable and is non-threatening, and exhibits itself in the way that the counsellor
displays body language, posture, eye contact, tone of voice and facial expressions.
