Introducing Caring for Children and Young People

Why young children’s development may occur in different
                     sequences and at different rates

The development charts in Figures 1 and 2 show us the typical stages of development
of young children. These typical stages help us to know how to care for and support
children as they grow, develop and learn.

Child development usually follows an expected pattern or sequence. For example,
babies generally crawl before they walk, and young children will usually use simple
words before they start to speak in sentences. The charts in Figures 1 and 2 give
examples of how children develop and what they can be expected to do at different
ages. However, it is important to remember that children do not all develop in the
same way or sequence, or at the same time or rate.

                                  Key Facts

                              • The sequence of development – the order in which children learn
                                and develop

                              • The rate of development – the age or stage at which they can do
                                something.
