Introducing Caring for Children and Young People

                   The sequence of development

Sometimes the sequence or order may be different – some babies will move from
sitting to standing without crawling first.

A child with older brothers and sisters may be used to playing with other children and
socialise easily, whereas a child with no other siblings may be unsure about joining in
games and playing with others, preferring to spend more time playing alone. In time,
most children achieve the expected stages – babies begin to walk, shy children start
                   to play and socialise.

                        ! STOP AND THINK!

Place these development stages in the correct sequence
                               or order:

                               Running Sitting up Walking Crawling

                   The rate of development

The rate or speed at which children learn and develop can also vary. Some children
naturally pick up language quickly or get lots of support at home to develop physical
skills. Other children may be shy of mixing with new people which may affect their
social skills. Some children learn in smaller steps and at a slower rate and will need
more adult support to develop everyday skills.
The sequence and rate at which children develop can be influenced by many things.
