Introducing Caring for Children and Young People

Development of young children from birth to three

The following charts summarise some of the key development stages of children from
birth to three. Use this information to help you complete Activity 4 and Activity 5.

Figure 1: Typical stages of development: Babies from birth to 12 months

                   Refer to Appendix.

A Activity 4: Early stages of development

Use Figure 1, ‘Typical stages of development: Babies from birth to
12 months’, from the Appendix to make notes for the following:

                              a) List three things a baby that is a few weeks old can do:

                                •

                                •

                                •

                              b) Outline the physical development of a baby between three and six
                                   months.

                              c) Outline the intellectual development of a baby aged eight months.

                              d) What activities would a baby of ten months enjoy?
Give one example here and say which area of development they
link to – e.g. ten month old baby will enjoy standing up with help
                                   (physical development)

You can use your notes to help with the assessment at the end of this section.
