Introducing Caring for Children and Young People
Here are some you might have used:
• Thinking what to write
• Checking the time
• Remembering some information
• Giving instructions to someone.
Language development identifies how a child communicates. This can be through
expression, gestures and signs, or sounds and spoken words.
Babies make sounds such as crying and babbling, and often communicate what they
want by reaching out and pointing to objects, or lifting their arms to be picked up.
Young children begin to use words together, such as, ‘Daddy gone’, or, ‘My cup’.
Children can understand spoken language before they use words. They listen to adults
and can understand. For example, waving when someone says, ‘Goodbye’.
This is known as receptive speech.
When children begin to use sounds and words to speak, this is called expressive
speech.
