Introducing Caring for Children and Young People

                       A Activity 1: Child development

Write down the age of a young child you know.

State two or three things that they can do by themselves.

E.g. child’s age is 18 months. She can: walk and feed herself using
                              a spoon.

                            Age:
                                 •

                                 •

                                 •

Children’s development is divided into key areas of development. These are:

                         • Physical

                         • Social

                         • Emotional

                         • Intellectual

                         • Language.

Physical development identifies how a child’s body develops skills of movement and
coordination. This may be a baby turning their head or rolling over, a young child who is
learning to climb up stairs, or a three year old jumping on and off balance beams.

Gross and fine motor skills are used to create these physical movements.

                                 Key Facts

                              • Gross motor skills are large movements using arms and legs –
                                for running, jumping, throwing

                              • Fine motor skills are smaller movements – using hands and
fingers – holding a cup, picking up objects, drawing with crayons.
