Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties
Why it is important to recognise that a Specific Learning
Difficulty is a lifelong condition
There is no known cure for SpLDs. The only appropriate treatment comes in the form of
education and support, to enable individuals to recognise and accept their particular
difficulty and adopt appropriate techniques that will allow them to adapt and thrive.
In order to ensure that the person’s changing needs are met and that they are
supported at different stages throughout their lives, it is important to recognise that
having a SpLD is a lifelong condition.
When the difficulties are recognised and the person receives the help and support
needed, the results can be remarkable as the difficulties can also be strengths,
especially in creative areas.
Many well-known and very successful people have SpLDs, such as:
• Keira Knightley
• Steven Spielberg
• Richard Branson
• Steve Jobs
• Pablo Picasso
• Stephen Hawking
• Agatha Christie.
