Information, Advice or Guidance
There are many different values, beliefs and attitudes which could affect your
interaction with clients, such as your own:
• Race
• Religion
• Sexual orientation and gender
• Moral viewpoints.
Some of these will not be obvious to you initially, but might become more obvious as
your client starts to explain their situation and requirements to you.
For example, a client comes into your department whilst you are working as a
counsellor and explains that they have had problems taking drugs in the past. This may
be something you find morally unacceptable and your initial thoughts might be to judge
your client. It is important you remain as impartial as possible, and ensure you stick to
structured advice to best help your client, without discriminating against them.
Key Facts
1. Structured approaches help you deal with all clients equally
2. It is against the law to discriminate against a client based on your
own values, beliefs or attitudes.
