Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties

The impact the strengths and barriers can have on individuals

with Specific Learning Difficulties in different contexts

It is important to remember SpLDs are not related to general intelligence and are
not the same for everyone. They can be mild or severe and vary depending on other
strengths, or difficulties, that the person may have.

More importantly, they vary depending on the kind of support and encouragement the
individual has from friends, family, teachers, health professionals and colleagues.

The barriers mentioned previously may impact on performance at work and the effect
of SpLDs can worsen when an individual is experiencing stress. SpLDs may therefore
prevent people from achieving at school, gaining qualifications, accessing training or
applying for jobs or promotions at work.

The strengths mentioned previously can mean that individuals with SpLDs
demonstrate lots of skills that benefit employers. This includes, for example, being
able to make connections between many different concepts, having the ability
to absorb information from numerous sources at the same time, and being very
hardworking and persistent. People with SpLDs are often enthusiastic, generous,
                   caring and empathetic.
