Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties
Why it is important to seek a formal diagnosis
Identification can help both children and adults to get the personalised support they
need, and referrals can then be made for specialist help.
It may also be of benefit in the workplace, where adjustments can be made to the
working environment so that the individual can perform their tasks more effectively.
If a person understands more about their Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD), they are
more likely to be able to develop coping mechanisms that will enable them to succeed
and achieve their ambitions.
There are also some financial incentives to receiving a formal diagnosis. If you are a
higher education student who lives with an SpLD such as dyslexia, dyspraxia or ADHD,
you can apply for the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). The DSA can help with the
costs of support and the specialist equipment to assist people with their studies.
