Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties
The strengths and barriers an individual with Specific
Learning Difficulties may experience in different contexts
Strengths
It is helpful to know that having a SpLD does not mean that individuals cannot achieve
their goals. Indeed, many people with SpLDs use their strengths, which can include
creativity, lateral thinking and being empathetic, to succeed in their chosen career.
Each side of the brain is known as a hemisphere. Both the left and the right
hemisphere specialises in performing different tasks. It is commonly believed that
individuals with dyslexia and dyspraxia utilise the right hemisphere more than the left,
and thus can perform certain tasks that require this side of the brain more effectively.
The left side of the brain handles:
• Thinking step-by-step
• Working with facts
• Explaining with words, such as using language to name, describe,
and define
• Remembering by using language
• Controlling emotions
• Taking life seriously
• Structured activities
• Organisation
• Logical reasoning.
