Counselling Skills

Complete the following activity to check your understanding of setting boundaries and
                   agreeing objectives.

A Activity 9: Setting boundaries and agreeing objectives

John is going to conduct a counselling session with Karen after she
has asked for help. When he welcomes her in, she bursts into tears.
He gets up and puts his arms round her to give her a hug and says,
‘Come on, we’ll go for a drink and you can tell me all about it.’

                              a) Describe the boundaries that John has broken.

                              b) Describe how John should have agreed objectives to maintain
                                    boundaries in this situation.

                                 Key Fact

For a helping relationship to be effective, boundaries must be
negotiated and agreed, and realistic objectives must be set.
