Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties
Clinical psychologists may choose to specialise in the assessment and diagnosis of
adults with dyslexia or other SpLDs.
A speech and language therapist will assess a child or adult’s speech and language
development and problems. The therapist will then help them to improve their
communication skills.
Educational psychologists support schools in their work with children with SpLDs.
They advise on the best methods to suit the individual child’s needs, looking at
teaching methods and classroom environments.
A child and adolescent mental health services specialist may be involved, working
alongside the school if a child or young person has anxiety or other mental health
problems as result of, or alongside, the SpLD.
The Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) in a school provides advice and
additional guidance to teachers and parents. They also coordinate any further special
provision a child may need.
Key Fact
A range of specialists will be involved with the diagnosis of an
SpLD. It is not usual for any one professional to make the diagnosis
on their own.
