The relationship between the client and the advisor
The client/advisor relationship is one of the most important skills to get right. Without
a strong relationship with your clients, you are unlikely to enable them to be honest
and explain their issues truthfully. However, a client/advisor relationship that is too
familiar is likely to be damaging, and may mean you give biased or skewed advice.
A client/advisor relationship can be made stronger and deeper by:
• Communication that is regular, effective, and blame free
• Having an awareness of the goals of the relationship
• An assurance that both parties want a sucessful relationship
• Having no reluctance to the truth, even when nobody wants to say or hear it
• The expectation that the other person is working to the best of their ability
• Honesty.
