Information, Advice or Guidance
Signposting good practice
Successful signposting contains most of the steps of referring with some slight
changes:
• Give the client clear reasons for signposting them
Clearly explain to the client why you are not able to assist them and which agencies
are available to help them in the local area.
• Give the client as much detail as possible about their options
Where there are a range of organisations suitable for the client to be signposted to,
present them with all the options and allow them to choose for themselves which one
best meets their requirements. Ensure that you give the client as much information as
you can about the organisation, such as location, opening times and point of contacts.
• Improve signposting with training
Staff involved in signposting should attend a range of training and development
courses which can help them determine when it is appropriate to signpost a client, as
well as good organisations to signpost to.
