Counselling Skills

A Activity 5: Open and closed questioning

Have a conversation with a friend or other person that you feel at
ease with. Practise the two types of questioning and afterwards
note the different types of responses.

The subject matter for your conversation should be non-threatening
                              – for example, summer holidays. Here are two examples to help you:

                              Q. ‘Where are you going on holiday?’ (Closed-ended question
                                    requiring one word answer.)

                              A. ‘Margate.’

                              Q. ‘Why did you choose Margate?’ (Open-ended question requiring
longer response that can be explored further.)

                              A. ‘Because I went there as a child and wanted to recapture the
                                    feeling I had then.’
