Introducing Caring for Children and Young People

                       A Activity 9: Positive environments

Use the table and images on the previous pages, to help you
complete this task. For Environments 1 and 2, provide a brief
explanation of how the features support children’s development.

Features of a positive environment (1): How children’s development
Outdoor play area used by toddlers aged between is supported
18–24 months (one and a half to two years)
                        a) The outdoor area has a sand pit
with buckets and small plastic spades.
Nearby is a low sink with water. More
buckets and containers are kept by
                          the sink.

                        b) There are toys, prams and
wheelbarrows for children to push on
                             the tarmac path.

                        c) A willow arch has been created on a
grassy area and children like to play
in there, running in and out. Staff help
them to play games together, such as
                          hide and seek.

                        d) Chalk boards have been hung on the
fence with large, easy to hold chalks
                          kept in a nearby box.

Features of a positive environment (2): How children’s development
Indoor nursery room for children aged between 24–30 is supported
months (two to two and half years)

                        a) Toys, puzzles and games are stored in
low-level open boxes, so that children
can choose what they would like to
                          play with.

                        b) There is a dressing up corner and also
simple cooking utensils such as bowls,
                          spoons and small saucepans.

                        c) Children can sit and look at books
in the quiet area where there are
                          cushions and blankets.

                        d) Each day, staff lay out paper, crayons
and pens on a low table for children.
