Introducing Caring for Children and Young People

Section 3: How to support young children’s development by
                                    providing for their basic needs

Within this section you will learn about:

                         • The basic needs of young children
                         • The role of the adult in providing the basic needs of the young child

                         • How providing the basic needs of young children supports their
                             development.

The basic needs of young children

Young children have similar needs to adults – they need food and water, a safe home,
a place to rest and sleep, loving family and carers, and stimulation. However, as young
children, they are not able to provide these things themselves and need caring and
responsible adults to provide for their basic needs to help them grow and develop.

The basic needs of young children can be grouped under these headings:

                         • Nutrition

                         • Comfort and reassurance

                         • Routine

                         • Learning and life skills.
