Introducing Caring for Children and Young People

Did you think of any of the following?

                         • Space to play and run around

                         • Different play materials

                         • Things that children can do for themselves, such as dressing up

                         • Toys, games, puzzles, story books

                         • Adults who can plan activities for children.

How the features of a positive environment can support the
                     development of young children

When caring for children, adults need to know:

                         • How old the children are

                         • What they are interested in and can do

                         • How they like to play

                         • Where they like to play.

This information can be used to create a positive environment that matches children’s
                   development and interests.

Each of the features of a positive environment can support young children’s
development. Look at the table on the following page for some examples.
