                   Answers to activities



                   Activity 4: Gender and mental health

                         1.    Boys are not as badly affected with a rise of 26% as opposed to 50%
                             for girls

                         2.    Rising levels of ‘body dissatisfaction’ – insecurity and low self-esteem about
                             their appearance – have been identified as driving the unprecedented
                             levels of mental turmoil in young women. The increasing use of social
                             media is also implicated.



                   Activity 6: Depression or low mood?

                   A low mood can include:

                         •   Sadness

                         •   Tiredness

                         •   Frustration


                         •   Anger.


                   Symptoms of depression can include the following:


                         •   Continuous low mood or sadness

                         •   Feeling hopeless or helpless

                         •   Feeling tearful

                         •   Feeling guilt-ridden

                         •   Irritable and intolerant of others


                         •   No motivation or interest in things

                         •   Difficulty in making decisions

                         •   No enjoyment in life

                         •   Suicidal thoughts.
