Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health

Reasons why children and young people may be reluctant to
seek medical intervention and a formal diagnosis

                        ! STOP AND THINK!

Based on what you’ve learnt so far, how do you think children and
young people might feel about being diagnosed with a mental
health problem? How would you feel if you were in their shoes?
Make a note of your thoughts below.

Did you think of any of the following? The CAMHS teams have found that young people
have lots of different thoughts and feelings about diagnosis, including:

                         • They don’t like being labelled

                         • They don’t want to be recognised in terms of their diagnosis

                         • They find it scary and serious, making them think they must be really sick

                         • The diagnosis may ‘follow them around’ and affect their future.
