Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health
Key Fact
Around half of all mental ill health experienced by the population has
generally already been established by the time the person is 14 years
old. This rises to 75% by the age of 24. We also know that 1 in 10
children now has a diagnosable mental health condition.

These alarming statistics have given rise to much concern at government levels and
in February 2016, the independent Mental Health Task Force released their report
entitled The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health.
This document sets out a strategy for the UK to tackle the growing problem of mental
ill health and includes over 50 recommendations for the government to consider.
We’re going to look more closely now at the impact of mental ill health on children
and young people.
