Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health
How other mental health conditions may impact children
and young people
All of the mental health conditions described above can have a lasting and serious
impact on the lives of children and young people.
ADHD
Children affected with ADHD can appear distracted and disorganised. Some can have
problems concentrating in class and do not seem to listen. They may also chatter
continuously and seem loud and noisy. Not all children have all the symptoms and
the behaviours can vary with the setting and age of the child.
Eating disorders
If allowed to continue untreated, eating disorders can become life-threatening,
and they certainly become harder to treat the longer they are left, with the effects
becoming more serious. These disorders can cause damage to health of the young
person, including stunting the growth of bones and internal organs. They result often
in poor concentration at school or college and withdrawal from friendship groups.
