Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health

                   Typical symptoms of PTSD include:

                         • Experiencing ‘flashbacks’ of the event – this is like reliving the traumatic
event in the mind and can be very frightening and distressing

                         • Sleeping badly

                         • Being easily startled or frightened by loud or indeed any noises

                         • Deliberately avoiding situations or circumstances that remind them
                             of the event.

It is difficult to make a diagnosis of PTSD in a child under the age of seven.

The Caldecott Foundation provides residential care for children and young people who
have experienced neglect and trauma. Read Jesmin’s story on the next page.
