Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health
Section 4: Specific mental health conditions that children
and young people may experience
This section will explore the following:
• Other mental health conditions that may present in children and
young people
• How to recognise a range of mental health conditions in children and
young people
• How other mental health conditions may impact children and young people
• What might constitute a mental health ‘crisis’ or emergency.
Other mental health conditions that may present in children
and young people
In addition to the more commonly known mental health conditions, there are other
conditions that may affect children and young people. Most of these rarely occur in
isolation and are usually accompanied by anxiety and stress and possibly
depression too.
ADHD
This behavioural disorder often becomes obvious in early childhood and causes
children, especially those under five, to be inattentive and hyperactive to a greater
degree than other children of the same age group. The condition affects around
2% to 5% of school aged children, with boys being more commonly affected than girls.
Eating Disorders
There are five main eating disorders:
1. Anorexia Nervosa – eating very little
2. Bulimia Nervosa – vomiting or taking laxatives to control weight
3. Binge Eating Disorder – eating large portions all at once
4. Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED)
5. Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).
