Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health

Possible causes of depression for children and young people

There is no specific cause for depression, and it can be caused by a mixture of things
rather than any single factor, but triggers may include stressful and traumatic life
                   events, such as:

                         • Parental separation and divorce

                         • Bereavement

                         • Transitions between schools and stages of life

                         • Relationship and family conflict and arguments

                         • Physical, sexual or emotional abuse

                         • Bullying.

                       A Activity 7: The Prince’s Trust

In January 2017, the BBC reported on an online survey carried
out for the Prince’s Trust which found that young people feel that
they lack control over their lives and have lower self-confidence,
leading to anxiety and depression. Read more about this survey
and discover what is causing these feelings of pessimism and
                             demoralisation amongst young people.
