External causes
These causes come from the world around the young person. They may be associated
with major life events or difficulties with relationships, for example.
School-related causes
Exam stress is well recognised as a problem for many young people from quite
an early age. Some stress is normal and may even help the child to work a little
harder, but too much stress can result in an inability to concentrate and worrying
unnecessarily or ignoring the problem which makes matters worse.
Children who are bullied, lack friends or have trouble with their school work often feel
stressed and anxious.
School phobia, where the child develops a sense of dread about going to school can
develop in some children and this is different from simply not wanting to go to school.
